Paul Hutchings loves the laughter that is inherent within the Casterbridge Speakers club. It has inspired him to hone his humorous speaking skills. He won the club contest last year, but missed out on the top spot at the Area contest to Bournemouth based, Clive Greenaway of Cottonwood Speakers.
Paul joined Casterbridge Speakers in 2010. After an absence of several years from the Toastmasters International programme, he felt his public speaking skills were getting rusty. He had been a founder of Cottonwood Speakers and was concerned he wouldn’t enjoy it quite the same.
What he found was a group of enthusiastic people working hard to get their club chartered; plus the same level of warmth and encouragement that he had remembered fondly about his previous clubs. His competitive nature found this a challenge so he volunteered for the role of president and was instrumental in it becoming chartered the following year.
Previously, Paul has been runner up Division Level competitions, for both Impromptu Topics and Evaluations; so is no stranger to the contest challenge.
“Everyone has their different reasons for joining; and whether you want to improve your public speaking skills, your interpersonal skills or simply increase your confidence, then Casterbridge Speakers offers all that and more.” Paul grins when he adds “I’m planning to deliver three speeches from my next set of advanced manuals as well as win some more speech contests this year.”
This is why he is defending his club title at the 2013 humorous speech contest taking place from 7.15pm at the Wessex Royale on the 18th September 2013.
If you would like to see how he gets on then visitors are welcomed warmly and may attend without charge.
